The award recognizes outstanding and innovative doctoral research in nanoscience at Bavarian universities and research institutions.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Michael was nominated for his doctoral thesis, <em>\u201cScaffolding approaches to increase pandemic preparedness on the example of Influenza A viruses.\u201d<\/em> His research focuses on developing antiviral strategies that can remain effective despite the continuous evolution of viral pathogens\u2014a major challenge for pandemic preparedness.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">A key concept of his work is the use of <strong>programmable nanoscale scaffolds<\/strong> to organize antiviral binders with precise spatial control. Using DNA origami and coiled-coil protein origami, Michael investigated how the geometry, spacing and valency of molecular interactions can be engineered to enhance antiviral activity.<\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">His research demonstrates how nanoscale organization can help compensate for reduced molecular recognition caused by viral evolution.
