We are delighted to announce that Dr. Michael Schachtner, a member of the Wagner Lab at the University of Regensburg, has been selected as one of six finalists for the 2026 Nano Innovation Award by the Center for NanoScience (CeNS) at LMU Munich. The award recognizes outstanding and innovative doctoral research in nanoscience at Bavarian universities and research institutions.

Michael was nominated for his doctoral thesis, “Scaffolding approaches to increase pandemic preparedness on the example of Influenza A viruses.” His research focuses on developing antiviral strategies that can remain effective despite the continuous evolution of viral pathogens—a major challenge for pandemic preparedness.

A key concept of his work is the use of programmable nanoscale scaffolds to organize antiviral binders with precise spatial control. Using DNA origami and coiled-coil protein origami, Michael investigated how the geometry, spacing and valency of molecular interactions can be engineered to enhance antiviral activity.

His research demonstrates how nanoscale organization can help compensate for reduced molecular recognition caused by viral evolution. The approach was further extended to different nanostructure platforms and viral targets beyond Influenza A, highlighting its potential as a broader strategy for antiviral engineering and pandemic preparedness.

The selection as a 2026 Nano Innovation Award finalist recognizes the originality and interdisciplinary nature of Michael’s research, which combines nanoscience, virology and biomedical engineering.
